A Challenge to “Conservatives” in Martin County
I recently ran across a statement by Barry Goldwater when asked: “What is the goal of Conservatism?”
Here are his words:
I have little interest in streamlining government or making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them, It is not to inaugurate new programs, but to cancel ones that do violence to the Constitution, or that have failed their purpose, or that impose on the people an unwarranted financial burden.
I will not attempt to discover legislation is “needed” before I have first determined whether it is constitutionally permissible. And if I should later be attacked for neglecting my constituents' “interests,” I shall reply that I was informed that their main interest is in liberty and that is the cause I am doing the very best I can.
Do we believe our representatives are even giving lip service to upholding this standard? We now have “Live Local” which is an Agenda 30 (UN /One World Order) goal and our county representatives have basically become a rubber stamp on state proposals.
And the BOCC themselves had affordable housing under consideration by – which surely is not a Conservative - Free market goal. They also are running businesses at beaches, golf courses, swimming pools, etc.
I challenge the Conservatives in Martin County to choose which standards are the goal of Conservatism.
In liberty,
Audrey Taggart
