A Rose by any other Name Smells as Sweet
What is the appropriate word that captures the essence of the dichotomy here? Is it: irony, incongruity, contradictory, obverse, humor? What?
The local school board has been under fire from parents who'd like to have pornography, attacks on science, on American culture, and on religion in the Martin school libraries' bookshelves. Reading today's paper, however, one reads of middle school students (in another state) forced to remove shirts with the expression“Let's Go Brandon” across the front. To add some common sense to the shirt issue, we read that a lawsuit has been filed by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) for unconstitutional viewpoint discrimination. “Let's go Brandon” has become a mantra for those disagreeing with the president. It began at a NASCAR race, has been used by congressmen, even Biden himself. Most treat is as humor. Students in that same middle school are seen wearing gay pride clothing. Most thought this issue was decided back in the '60s when the Supreme Court upheld students' constitutional right to wear black armbands as protest to the Vietnam War. Profanity is not allowed in school but neither is staff allowed to censor political speech or subject children to pornography or unsupported “science” theories.
