We Reap What We Sow

There are unintended but inevitable consequences of one-party control.  Just about everyone knows the mess created by generations of one-party rule in such places as New York and California and Washington and of course, the District of Columbia to mention a few.

Floridians could be facing a similar fate if we are not mindful of history. As Jorge Santayana put it, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” We have elected a firm majority in both Florida houses and accomplished many objectives that are good for Floridians i e., 2nd amendment protections, strengthened election integrity, and of course fought to stem the tide of wokeness in our schools and libraries— laudable goals for sure. With a $21.8 Billion surplus in the State’s budget we become rather like children that can’t wait to smash open the piggy bank and spend it.

In shades of the little pigs in George Orwell’s book “Animal Farm” we dole it out to state and local government employees in the form of tax breaks on top of what the general public gets in homestead exemptions. More tax breaks for property developers and builders to develop every square inch of land for affordable housing. All this in the name of a cleverly inventive slogan “Live Local.”

Live local?  If local living means destroying home rule, it seems an odd way to accomplish it.  Big fat ever-growing government is not a conservative way to govern. The more we erode the principle of home rule the more central government grows until it becomes self-perpetuating and stiflingly oppressive.
